My balance or What's Left looks wrong

What's Left counts spending wallets only. Savings, debts, other currencies, bank holds, estimates and transfers explain most numbers that look off.

Works on iPhone, iPad, Android, Mac and the webUpdated

A figure that looks wrong is usually a figure that counts something other than what you expected, not a lost entry. What's Left counts your spending wallets only. Money out and Spending treat card purchases, transfers and bank holds in ways that surprise people. A single wallet's balance is off when its opening balance was wrong or an entry was never logged.

Why it happens

  • What's Left leaves out savings, debts and lending. It is the combined balance of your spending wallets, in your main currency. The app's own wording: "The balance of your spending wallets right now - the money you can actually spend. Savings, debts and lending live on the Money tab, so they never swing it." Money you move into a savings goal leaves a spending wallet, so What's Left goes down even though you spent nothing. Archived wallets, and wallets that are savings goals, debts, lending or bank-linked investments, are not in it. See wallet types and savings goals.
  • The opening balance is wrong, or entries are missing. A wallet's balance is its opening balance plus every entry in it. If you created it with 0 and it held cash, every later figure is short by that cash. Cash you spent and never logged leaves the balance too high.
  • A currency has no rate, or the rate moved. Wallets in other currencies are converted into your main currency at today's rate, so What's Left changes when rates change. The line under the figure says "≈ at today’s rate", or "≈ estimated rates" when a rate had to be estimated. A currency with no rate at all is left out of the figure and listed apart, as in "+ 0.5 BTC in other wallets". The Money tab leaves it out of Assets and Liabilities without saying so. See how rates work.
  • A bank row is still pending. A bank hold counts at once, with a "Pending" pill. The day total reads "incl. £X pending" and Money out reads "Money out includes £X pending - the bank may still change it". If the bank changes or drops the hold, the figure moves.
  • An entry is estimated. An entry marked "Estimated" counts at the approximate amount you gave. See log a rough amount.
  • A card purchase is Spending, not Money out. The app's wording for Spending: "A card purchase counts here now - the cash leaves when you pay the card." Money out is cash that left your wallets: spending paid in cash plus loan payments, interest and principal. See track a credit card.
  • A transfer counts in neither Money in nor Money out. Moving your own money between wallets changes the two wallets' balances and nothing else. A refund lowers Money out. Borrowed money counts in Money in, labelled "borrowed - not earnings". See move money between your wallets.
  • Something posted since you last looked. A scheduled bill posts when you open the app ("posted while you were away"), a bank import adds rows, and a change from another device arrives with sync. See bills and recurring payments.

What to do

  1. Tap the hero figure's line, or the (i) beside Money in and Money out, to open What the numbers mean. It shows each figure beside its meaning, live.
  2. Open the Money tab and compare the wallets you expect in What's Left. Only the section Spending feeds it. A goal, a debt or a lending wallet sits in its own section.
  3. Open the wallet that looks wrong: Money tab, then tap the wallet. Scroll to the first row, Opening balance, and check the entries under it. Look for a missing, doubled or misdated entry and fix it. See edit, delete or undo a transaction.
  4. If the wallet has a real balance you can check (cash in your hand, a bank app), tap Update balance, type the amount in Actual balance, and tap Correct the balance. This adds a dated correction row that never counts as spending or income, and you can undo it. See update a balance that does not match.
  5. For a bank-linked wallet, read the strip in the wallet: "Matches the bank", or "Bank says" followed by an amount with Review. The bank's figure leaves out pending rows; the app's figure includes them.
  6. For an amount in another currency, open the entry and read the conversion row. See a converted amount looks wrong.
  7. If the figure differs between two devices, check that both are synced. See my changes are not showing on my other device.

If that did not help

Write to us from SettingsAboutContact support (see contact support). Include the app version shown at the foot of Settings, the wallet's name and currency, the figure you see and the figure you expect, and a screenshot of What the numbers mean. Cover any figure you would rather not share.
