A converted amount looks wrong

Tavala locks each entry's rate on its date and shows wallets at today's rate. Your bank's rate differs, so check the rate line and enter your own.

Works on iPhone, iPad, Android, Mac and the webUpdated

A converted amount differs from what you expected for one of a few reasons: Tavala converted at the rate for the entry's date, not today's; no rate existed for that exact day, so it used the nearest one; you or the capture bar picked a different currency than you meant; or your bank charged its own rate and fees. You can read the rate on the entry and replace it with your own.

Why it happens

  • The rate is locked on the entry's date. When you save an entry in another currency, Tavala converts it at the rate for that date and keeps the result. A later rate change never alters it. Wallet balances and net worth are different: they are converted at today's rate every time, so they move when rates move. The footer of What the numbers mean says it: "Money in, Money out and Spending are locked at each transaction’s date, so a past month never shifts. Balance and Net worth are live, at today’s rate."
  • No rate existed for that exact day. Tavala then uses the nearest day and labels the entry "Estimated · nearest date". The detail line reads "Estimated from Sep 27, 2026", for example.
  • Rates are reference rates. They come from a daily exchange-rate feed ("Rates by Exchange Rate API") and, for coins, CoinGecko ("Data provided by CoinGecko"). Your bank or card applies its own rate and often a fee, so its figure can differ by a little or a lot.
  • A rate you typed. An entry labelled "Manual rate" uses the rate you entered for that one entry.
  • The rates on the device are old. Tavala reads fresh rates when you open the app or come back to it, at most once every 3 hours. Offline, it uses the rates stored on the device. A new install starts from a rate snapshot that ships with the app, labelled "Bundled rate".
  • There is no rate. The editor shows "No rate - tap to enter" and "Add a rate for EUR → USD", and a note such as "No EUR → USD rate yet - this won’t count in totals until a rate arrives." The capture bar shows a greyed "≈ ? EUR" chip and, on saving, "No rate for MKD yet - finish this one in the form." An entry saved without a rate counts in no total. The Activity row then has no "in totals" line.
  • The currency is not the one you meant. A symbol such as $ or kr is shared by several currencies, and a code in lower case may be read as a word. See everything the capture bar understands.
  • You changed your main currency. Tavala re-values past entries at the rate on each entry's own date, and rescales budgets once at today's rate. A few may be estimated if an old rate is not known.

What to do

  1. Open the entry: HomeActivity, then tap the row. On a wide iPad, Mac or browser window, tap the row, then Edit. A row in another currency shows "≈" lines under the amount: the wallet-currency amount and, when different, "≈ $14.29 in totals".
  2. Read the conversion row. It is labelled Charged to wallet (Recipient gets for a transfer) and shows the converted amount, then "Live rate", "Estimated · nearest date" or "Manual rate", then the rate, such as 1 EUR = 1.1344 USD. When neither the entry's currency nor the wallet's is your main currency, a note below adds what the entry counts as in your totals: ≈ $14.18 in your totals · 1 EUR = 1.1344 USD · Live rate, Sep 30, 2026.
  3. If the currency is wrong, tap the currency chip (the Entry currency picker) and pick the right one.
  4. If the amount should match your bank statement, enter your own rate: tap the pencil (Edit rate), type the rate in the field, and tap Use rate. Tap Save changes. The rate applies to this entry only. Tap the restore icon (Use live rate) to go back to Tavala's rate. Changing the date, the currency or the wallet resets a rate you typed, so set the rate last. See use your own exchange rate for one entry.
  5. To match the bank exactly, you can also record the entry in the wallet's own currency, using the amount your bank charged.
  6. If the editor says "No rate - tap to enter", enter a rate. The editor will not save an entry whose wallet conversion has no rate ("Add an exchange rate"). If an entry was saved with a note that it will not count in totals until a rate arrives, open the app on a connection, then open and save the entry again once a rate exists.
  7. If the totals look wrong after switching your main currency, wait for the switch to finish and check SettingsMoneyMain currency. See choose or change your main currency.
  8. Open the app on a connection for a moment, so it can fetch current rates.

If that did not help

Write to us from SettingsAboutContact support (see contact support). Include the app version at the foot of Settings, the two currencies, the entry's date, the amount you entered, the converted amount and the rate line under it (for example "Estimated · nearest date"), and the amount your bank charged.
