How Tavala converts currencies and which rate it keeps

Entries keep the rate of the day you saved them. Balances and net worth use today's rate. See where rates come from and what Estimated means.

Works on iPhone, iPad, Android, Mac and the webUpdated

Tavala uses two rules for exchange rates. An entry keeps the rate of the day you saved it, for good. Wallet balances and net worth are converted again at today's rate every time you look at them. The rates come from a shared list that your device keeps a copy of, so conversions also work offline.

The two rules

WhatWhich rateDoes it change later?
Spending, income, budgets, reportsThe rate of the entry's date, locked when you saveNo
Wallet balances, net worth, What's LeftToday's rateYes, every time rates move

For example, taxi 1200 MKD charged to "Current account" (EUR) at 1 MKD = 0.01626 EUR is saved as €19.51. A month later the denar is worth a little more or less, and the taxi still reads €19.51 in Activity, budgets and reports. "Dollar savings" (USD), though, is shown in euro at the rate of the day you open the Money tab.

What an entry keeps

An entry saved in a different currency from its wallet keeps three amounts: the amount you typed, the amount charged to the wallet, and its value in your main currency. All three are fixed when you save.

  • Editing the note or the category never changes them.
  • Changing only the amount keeps the rate the entry had.
  • Changing the date, the wallet or the currency looks up a rate again.

Where rates come from

  • Regular currencies come from Exchange Rate API, published once a day. A second public source fills the few currencies the first one lacks.
  • Coins come from CoinGecko, refreshed every 6 hours.
  • Everything is stored against the US dollar. A pair such as euro to denar is worked out through it.
  • The credits are at SettingsAboutRates by Exchange Rate API and SettingsAboutData provided by CoinGecko.

These are reference rates, not your bank's. A card or an ATM may charge a different rate or a fee, so the amount on your statement can differ. To match it, see use your own exchange rate for one entry.

How your device gets them

  • Tavala reads the list when you open it and when you return to it, at most once every 3 hours, and right after you sign in. You do not need an account.
  • It keeps the last 7 days of rates for every currency, so any currency converts at once. For the currencies you actually use, it also keeps about 400 days of history. Adding a wallet or an entry in a new currency fetches that history straight away.
  • With no connection, Tavala converts with what it has stored. A new install starts with a snapshot of regular-currency rates built into the app. It has no coin prices, so coins need one fetch first.

What the labels mean

LabelMeaning
Live rateThe list has a rate for that exact day
Estimated · nearest dateThere was no rate for that exact day, so the closest day's rate was used
Manual rateYou typed the rate yourself, for this entry only

You also meet the same words in summary lines: "Live rate, Sep 30, 2026", "Estimated from Sep 27, 2026", "Bundled rate" for the snapshot built into the app, and "Rate by CoinGecko" for coins. Rates show two decimals from 100 up, four decimals from 0.1 up, and four significant digits below that.

Estimated · nearest date describes the rate. It is not the Est. chip, which you tap to mark an amount as approximate. An old date, a day whose rates have not been published yet, or a currency with little history can all give an estimated rate.

When there is no rate

  • A new entry cannot be saved until a rate exists or you enter your own. See record spending in another currency.
  • On the Money tab, a wallet in a currency with no rate is left out of Assets, Liabilities and net worth. Home's What's Left lists such amounts separately, for example "+ 0.5 BTC in other wallets".

Good to know

  • There is no setting for a global or per-wallet rate. A manual rate belongs to one entry.
  • Changing your main currency re-values past entries at the rate of each entry's own date. See choose or change your main currency.
  • Foreign amounts never cost a currency slot. Only wallets count toward the free plan's 2 currencies per space.
  • A converted amount looks wrong? See a converted amount looks wrong.
