Use your own exchange rate for one entry

In the full form, tap the pencil on the conversion card and type the rate you actually got. It applies to that one entry and changes nothing else.

Works on iPhone, iPad, Android, Mac and the webUpdated

When an entry is in a different currency from its wallet, you can replace Tavala's rate with your own, for example to match your card statement or the rate an exchange booth gave you. A rate you enter applies to that one entry. It is never saved as a general rate and changes no other entry.

Enter your own rate

  1. Open the full form: in the capture bar, with the field empty, tap the round + at its right. Or type your line first and tap the expand icon. The capture bar itself has no place for a rate.
  2. Enter the amount. Then set the currency chip, the wallet chip and the date, because changing any of them clears a rate you entered.
  3. When the currency differs from the wallet's, a card appears: Charged to wallet, or Recipient gets on a transfer. Tap its pencil (Edit rate). The line under the amount also opens the same sheet.
  4. In the sheet titled "Rate · 1 USD = ? EUR" (with your two currencies), replace the number in the field with your rate. The field starts with the rate Tavala found, or is empty when it found none. Tap Use rate.
  5. The card now reads Manual rate, with your rate and the converted amount. Tap Save.

For example, you took out 200 USD in a cash machine abroad with "Current account" (EUR). Your statement shows €182.40. Type 0.912, and the card reads €182.40 and "1 USD = 0.912 EUR".

The rate says how many units of the wallet's currency one unit of the entry's currency buys. A comma works as the decimal point. A rate of 0 or a word is ignored, and the sheet closes without changing anything.

Go back to Tavala's rate

Once you have entered a rate, a second icon appears on the card (Use live rate). Tap it to return to the rate from the list. Changing the date, the wallet or the currency does the same.

What your rate changes

  • The amount charged to the wallet, and so that wallet's balance.
  • The value in your totals, only when the wallet is in your main currency: then the same figure counts. When the entry itself is in your main currency, totals count the amount you typed. When neither the wallet nor the entry is in your main currency, your totals use the ordinary rate for the entry's date.
  • Nothing else. Other entries, the shared rates and today's conversions of your balances are untouched.

Good to know

  • Where it is available. Expenses, income and refunds in a currency other than the wallet's, and transfers between wallets of different currencies.
  • When there is no rate at all, the card reads "No rate - tap to enter" and Save stays off until you give one. See how rates work.
  • There is no global rate. You cannot set one rate for a wallet or for a currency. Enter your own rate on each entry that needs one.
  • Editing later. Saving an entry again without touching its amount, currency, wallet, date or rate keeps what was stored.
  • Not the same as an estimate. The Est. chip marks an amount as approximate. A manual rate is about the exchange rate. See log a rough amount or catch up after a few days.
