Log a rough amount or catch up after a few days

Put ~ before an amount to mark it as an estimate, or type "~150 last 3 days" to log a stretch you forgot as one rough entry dated today.

Works on iPhone, iPad, Android, Mac and the webUpdated

Type ~ before an amount (~45 lunch) to mark it as an estimate. To log days you forgot, type one rough figure with a phrase such as last 3 days or since friday: Tavala saves one estimated entry dated today, not one entry per day. Estimates count in your totals like any other entry, and they are tagged so you can see them and correct them later.

Log a rough amount

  1. Open the capture bar (see Add an expense in one line).
  2. Type the amount with a ~ in front, such as ~45 lunch or ~€45. You can also put an estimate word right before the amount, in any of the six languages the bar reads: about 30 taxi, dinner roughly 45, ca. 120 tanken, unos 30 taxi, environ 40 resto.
  3. Check the chips. Estimated appears next to the amount.
  4. Tap the arrow on the right, or press Return.

In the full form, tap the Est. chip instead. When it is selected, the amount is an estimate. Tap it again to clear the mark.

The entry shows an Estimated tag in Activity. When you learn the real figure, open the entry, change the amount and tap Est. to clear the mark. See edit, delete or undo a transaction.

Catch up after a few days

When you have not added an entry yourself for more than 3 days, the capture bar's placeholder changes to Roughly what did the last days cost? try "~150". It appears once you have logged at least one entry by hand. Entries imported from a bank and bills that post by themselves do not count as logging.

  1. Open the capture bar.
  2. Type one rough figure for the whole stretch. Any of these works:
    • ~150
    • about 150 last 3 days
    • 80 groceries since yesterday
    • about 120 since friday
  3. Check the chips: the entry is estimated and its date is Today.
  4. Tap the arrow.

One entry is saved, marked as estimated and dated today. If you would rather keep each day on its own date, add separate entries and back-date them: 20 lunch 2 days ago.

The phrases Tavala reads

You typeResult
since friday, since fri, since yesterdayEstimated, dated today. The note keeps since Fri or since yesterday
last 3 days, last 1 dayEstimated, dated today. The note keeps last 3 days or last 1 day
last 366 days, last 0 days, since tuesday2Not a phrase: plain text in the note, and no estimate mark
  • Any weekday works after since, written in full or in three letters. The number after last is from 1 to 365.
  • The same phrases work in German, Spanish, French, Macedonian and Hindi: seit freitag, desde el viernes, depuis hier, од петок, कल से, letzte 3 tage, últimos 3 días. In those languages the phrase stays in the note as you typed it.
  • The phrase stays in the note, tidied, so you can see later what the entry covers. Its words never become the amount, the date, a category or a trip: last 3 days is not €3.
  • Other words around it behave as usual: roughly 300 last 3 days meals is €300, estimated, dated today, with the note last 3 days meals.

When the difference is a balance

If the money is missing from a wallet rather than from a day, correct the balance. On the wallet's screen, tap Update balance. For a spending wallet, Tavala offers It’s spending I didn’t log (or It’s income I didn’t log), which opens the full form with the difference filled in. See update a balance that does not match.

After a trip, the trip's summary offers Add what you forgot, which opens the capture bar with an Estimated chip and the trip already chosen, and Count your cash for each cash wallet you spent from. See see what a trip or a project cost.

Good to know

  • Reminders. In SettingsDeviceNotifications, Catch-up check-in sends one note after a few quiet days, and opening the app resets it. Daily log reminder sends an evening note and skips the days you already logged. See bill reminders and notifications.
  • Bills. A bill or recurring payment posts on its own date, even when the app is closed. Home then names what posted while you were away, with a Review button. That is separate from catching up.
  • Removing the mark. An estimate you typed with ~ or about is part of the text, so edit the text to remove it. The Estimated chip that Add what you forgot sets has an x that removes it.
  • Totals. An estimated entry counts in Spending, Money out, budgets and reports like any other. On a trip's summary, the estimated share is named ("Estimated entries make up … of this"), and an export has an Estimated column.
  • Where ~ goes. ~45 and dinner ~45 are estimates. 45~ has no amount, and dinner ~ 45 leaves the ~ in the note.
