Bill reminders and notifications

Turn on notifications to get a reminder the day before and the morning a bill is due. Reminders are set on your device, show no amounts and come once a day.

Works on iPhone, iPad, Android and MacUpdated

Tavala can remind you the day before a bill is due and again on the morning it is due. Reminders are off until you allow them, and they are scheduled on your device: nothing about your money is sent to a server, and no amount ever appears on the lock screen.

Turn on bill reminders

  1. Open SettingsDeviceNotifications. On a phone, tap the round person icon at the top right to reach Settings. On an iPad or a Mac, Settings is at the foot of the rail or the sidebar.
  2. Switch on Allow notifications.
  3. A sheet titled "Stay gently in the loop" explains what you will get. Tap Turn on, or Not now to leave it off.
  4. Allow notifications in the system prompt that follows.
  5. Check that Bill reminders is on. It is on by default once notifications are allowed.

If you refused the system prompt earlier, Tavala says "Notifications are off in system settings - enable them there first, then flip this switch again." Allow Tavala in your device's notification settings, then switch Allow notifications on again.

Reminders only exist for bills that are set up as recurring rules.

What a bill reminder says

  • One notification per morning covers what is due that day and the next. One bill: its name as the title and "Rent is due today." or "Rent is due tomorrow." as the text. Several bills: the title is "3 payments" and the text lists them, such as "Rent, Netflix and 1 more are due today."
  • It names the bill and never the amount. A rule without a name reads "A payment", or "A transfer".
  • Any active rule counts, including income and transfers. Paused and finished rules do not.
  • If a linked card or loan has a payment due, the same morning notification adds "Visa's payment is due in 2 days." (United States and Canada bank connections).

Good to know

  • At most one nudge a day. A day with a rate-change, cash or catch-up note drops the daily log reminder. Several bills on one day come as one notification.
  • Reminders are rebuilt each time you open Tavala, for the next 14 days. If you do not open the app for more than about two weeks, nothing new is scheduled until you do. Open it to refresh the schedule. If a reminder's time has already passed when you open the app, that one is skipped.
  • Per device. Reminders do not sync. Turn them on in each device where you want them.
  • Android timing. Android delivers reminders at an approximate time, so they can arrive a little late.
  • iPhone, iPad and Mac. While Tavala is open on the screen, reminders do not pop up. They appear when the app is closed or in the background.
  • No quiet hours. Tavala has no quiet hours of its own. The only timing control is Reminder time. Use your device's Focus or Do Not Disturb settings for the rest.
  • Not covered. There is no budget alert, no report notification and no push message from a server. The web app does not send reminders.
  • Turning off. Switching Allow notifications off cancels every scheduled reminder.
  • Nothing arrives? See I am not getting bill reminders.
