I am not getting bill reminders

Bill reminders need the master switch on, the phone's permission, an active recurring rule and a recent app open. They are set per device and arrive at 9:00.

Works on iPhone, iPad, Android and MacUpdated

Tavala sends bill reminders from your phone, not from a server, so each of these has to be true on that device: Allow notifications is on, the phone lets Tavala send notifications, a recurring rule is active, and you opened Tavala in the last two weeks. Reminders arrive at 9:00 in the morning, the day before a payment is due and on the day.

Why it happens

  • The master switch is off. Allow notifications is off until you turn it on, and the switches below it (Bill reminders and the others) stay off and cannot be changed until you do.
  • The phone refused the permission. Turning the switch on asks the phone for permission. If it was refused, Tavala shows "Notifications are off in system settings - enable them there first, then flip this switch again."
  • There is no active recurring rule. Reminders come from your recurring payments, the rules in Recurring & bills. A one-off entry gets no reminder. A paused rule shows "Paused" and gets none. See add a bill or a recurring payment.
  • You have not opened Tavala for more than about 2 weeks. Tavala sets up the next 14 days of reminders each time you open it. If the app stays closed longer, no new ones are set until you open it again.
  • It is a different device. Reminders are set on the device and are not synced. Turn them on on each device. Signing out turns notifications off on that device.
  • The reminder time passed. One notification covers a day at 9:00 and mentions what is due today and tomorrow. If you add a bill after 9:00 on the day before it is due, that day's reminder time is already over.
  • The app was open. On iPhone, iPad and Mac, Tavala does not show a banner while it is open. Reminders appear when it is closed or in the background.
  • The phone is holding them back. A Focus or Do Not Disturb mode, a notification summary or an Android battery saver can delay or hide them. On Android, reminders are scheduled loosely, so one can arrive a little late.
  • It is the web version. A browser cannot show Tavala's reminders, so Settings there has no Notifications row. Reminders are available in the apps for iPhone, iPad, Android and Mac.

What to do

  1. Open SettingsDeviceNotifications. Turn on Allow notifications. On the sheet "Stay gently in the loop", tap Turn on, then allow notifications in the phone's own prompt.
  2. If the phone prompt does not appear, or you refused it earlier, open the phone's settings (iOS and Mac: Settings or System Settings, then Notifications, then Tavala; Android: Settings, then Apps, then Tavala, then Notifications), allow notifications, return to Tavala and turn the switch on again.
  3. Check that Bill reminders is on: "The day before and the morning a recurring payment is due." For card and loan due dates from a connected bank, this same switch controls the reminder two days ahead.
  4. Open SettingsMoneyRecurring & bills. Under Rules, check that your bill is there and that its switch is on, not "Paused". If it is not there, tap New recurring rule and add it. Give it a name: the reminder uses it, so "Rent" reads "Rent is due tomorrow."
  5. Open Tavala again. Reminders for the next 14 days are rebuilt each time it opens or returns to the foreground.
  6. On Android, if reminders arrive late or never, check that Tavala's notification channels (such as Bill reminders) are on and that battery saving is not stopping the app.
  7. On another device, repeat steps 1 to 4. Reminders do not follow your account.

If that did not help

Write to us from SettingsAboutContact support (see contact support). Include your device and its system version, the app version at the foot of Settings, whether Allow notifications and Bill reminders are on, the name and next date of the bill that did not remind you, and whether other apps' notifications arrive. For how the reminders work, see bill reminders and notifications.
