My changes are not showing on my other device

Check the sync status in Settings, then the account, the space and the free plan's one synced device. Changes stay safe on the device until they upload.

Works on iPhone, iPad, Android, Mac and the webUpdated

An entry that is missing on your other device is almost always one of five things: the device that made it is a guest or is offline, the two devices use different accounts or different spaces, the account refused the change, or the free plan's one synced device is the other one. Everything you entered stays on the device you entered it on until it uploads.

Why it happens

  • The device is a guest. Without an account, data stays on the device with no backup and nothing syncs. Settings shows "Guest" and "Local only - this device".
  • The device is offline or still connecting. Changes are saved on the device and upload when it is back online. This is normal, not a fault.
  • The two devices use different accounts. Each account has its own data. The email at the top of Settings says which one a device uses.
  • The other device shows a different space. Everything lives inside a space, and each device remembers which space it has open. An entry made in "Household" does not show while the other device has "Personal" open. See spaces.
  • The account refused a change. The change stays on the device, and Home says so. See the banner below.
  • The free plan syncs one device. When plan limits apply, a second device that is not the synced one stops syncing and becomes read-only, and Home says "This phone stopped syncing on 12 Oct." See devices on the free plan.
  • The session ended. If your sign-in was revoked, Home says "Your session ended before 2 changes could upload. They're saved on this device - sign in again to finish."
  • The other device has not caught up. It receives changes while Tavala is open and connected. A device that has been closed for a while catches up when you open it.

What to do

  1. On the device where you made the change, open Settings. On a phone, tap the round person icon at the top right. On an iPad or a Mac, choose Settings at the foot of the rail or the sidebar. Read the status line under your email. On a wide window, the sidebar foot shows the same short word. The table under these steps says what each status means.
  2. If Home shows "N changes couldn't be saved to your account. They're still on this device.", tap Review. The sheet "Changes that couldn't be saved" lists each change with a reason, such as "This space holds 2 currencies on the free plan." or "This wallet is read-only on the free plan.". Tap Try again to send a change again ("Saved again - Tavala will try to sync it."), or Delete to let it go ("Change deleted", with Undo). Changes the server writes itself, such as bank data and members, offer Delete only.
  3. If the card says Guest, tap Create account or Sign in. Your data on this device moves into the account and starts syncing. See create an account.
  4. On both devices, check that the email under Settings is the same.
  5. On both devices, tap the space name at the top of Home (on a wide window the space switcher heads the sidebar). Under "Your spaces", pick the same space.
  6. If Home says "This phone stopped syncing on 12 Oct." (on an iPad it says "This tablet", on a Mac or in a browser "This device"), tap Sync here, or open SettingsDevices and tap Sync on this device. Then tap Move here on the sheet "Sync on this device?". Moving is free, up to 3 times in 30 days.
  7. On the other device, close Tavala, open it again and check its own status line the same way.
  8. Before you sign out of a device, let it finish. If changes are waiting, the sheet "Sign out?" says "N changes haven't synced yet. Signing out now would delete them from this device." Choose Wait for sync rather than Sign out anyway. See sign out.

What each status means

You seeWhat it means and what to do
"Synced", then "Across your devices · 5m ago."This device is up to date. Check the other device.
"Last synced 3h ago", then "Last synced across devices 3h ago. Changes from your other devices may not be here yet - everything on this device is safe."The last sync is more than 2 hours old. Check the connection and keep Tavala open for a minute.
"Syncing…" or "Connecting…"Wait a moment. A brief "Syncing…" after each change is normal.
"Offline", then "Offline - 3 changes saved on this device and will sync when you're back online."No connection. Reconnect; the changes upload by themselves.
"Sync problem", then "Some changes haven't reached the cloud yet - Tavala keeps retrying. Everything is safe on this device."Tavala is retrying. Keep the app open on a good connection. Home shows the same message with Details, which opens Settings.
"Some changes were rejected"The account refused them. Go to step 2.
"Local only - this device" in Settings, or "On this device" in the sidebarYou are a guest. Go to step 3.

If that did not help

Write to us from SettingsAboutContact support (see contact support). Include the app version at the foot of Settings, the exact status word and sentence under your email on each device, whether Home shows a banner and its text, which device made the change, and roughly when. Keep the unsynced device open and signed in until we reply, so its changes are not lost.
