Devices on the free plan

The free plan syncs one device at a time and lets you move syncing to another device 3 times in 30 days. Tavala Plus syncs every device.

Works on iPhone, iPad, Android, Mac and the webUpdated

On the free plan, one device syncs with your account at a time: one phone, tablet, Mac or browser. You can move syncing to another device for free, up to 3 times in 30 days. Tavala Plus syncs every device.

The rules

  • One syncing device. All browsers you use count as one device, called "Browser".
  • Moving is free, 3 times in 30 days. Once the 3 moves are used, Tavala tells you the date the next move is possible.
  • A device you stop using lets go by itself. A device that has not been seen for 30 days gives its place up.
  • Plus syncs every device. See free and Tavala Plus compared.
  • Shared spaces do not add devices. Each person's devices follow that person's own plan, whoever owns the space.
  • Nothing is deleted. The device that stops syncing keeps its copy; it becomes read-only.

What you see when you sign in on a second device

When you sign in on another device and the place is taken, a full page called Sync on this device? opens before anything is downloaded or moved. It reads, for example: "Tavala syncs on iPhone, last synced yesterday. Move syncing to this tablet?"

Under it is a counter: "Moving is free. 2 moves left in these 30 days." Your choices:

  • Move here. Syncing moves to this device. The other device sends the changes it was holding one last time, then becomes read-only.
  • The Plus buttons, to sync every device instead.
  • Not now. This device stays a guest with its own data, and nothing of your account is put on it. The back button does nothing on this page, so choose one of the buttons.

If the 3 moves are used, there is no Move here. The page says "Syncing has moved 3 times in 30 days. The next move is possible on 12 Oct." and offers Plus or Not now.

What you see on the device that stopped syncing

Home shows a card: "This phone stopped syncing on 12 Oct." (a Mac or a browser reads "This device stopped syncing on 12 Oct."). Under it: "Everything here is read-only until this device syncs again." The card has two buttons:

  • Sync here opens the same move choices.
  • Plus syncs every device opens the Plus sheet.

If you try to add or change something, a message says "This phone stopped syncing. Move syncing here to make changes." You can still read everything on the device.

See your devices

Open SettingsDevices (Settings is the round person icon at the top right on a phone; on an iPad or a Mac it is at the foot of the rail or the sidebar). You must be signed in. The list shows each device as iPhone, iPad, Android phone, Android tablet, Mac or Browser, with "(this device)" beside the one you hold. Under each:

  • Syncs · Last seen today for the device that holds the place.
  • Stopped syncing 12 Oct (syncing moved) for one that let go. The reason is one of "syncing moved", "unseen for 30 days", "Plus ended" or "stopped".

On a device that stopped, the screen also shows Sync on this device.

Good to know

  • A lost or broken phone. You do not have to do anything: it lets go after 30 days unseen. To switch sooner, sign in on the new device and choose Move here; that counts as one move.
  • Guests have no devices to manage. Without an account nothing syncs; see use Tavala without an account.
  • Why a change may not appear elsewhere. A device that stopped syncing neither uploads nor downloads. See my changes are not showing on my other device.
