Tavala on iPad and Mac

Tavala on iPad and Mac is the same app with a side rail or sidebar, a menu bar and shortcuts. See where things sit and what differs from the iPhone.

Works on iPad and MacUpdated

On an iPad or a Mac, Tavala is the same app and the same account as on the iPhone. The layout follows the width of the window, so you get a side rail or a sidebar instead of the bottom bar, and on a Mac there is a menu bar with keyboard shortcuts. The Mac app needs macOS 13.5 or later.

The layout follows the window width

Window widthNavigation
Under 600 pointsThe phone layout: a bottom bar with a round + in the middle. Settings is the round person icon at the top right
600 to 839 pointsA narrow rail on the left: a round + at the top, then Home, Budgets, Money and Plan, with Settings at the foot
840 points and widerA sidebar: the space switcher at the top, Add transaction, the four tabs, a More heading with Reports and Recurring, then the sync status word and Settings at the foot

An iPad shows the rail or the sidebar depending on its size and how you hold it. A Mac window changes as you resize it. Forms, Settings and detail pages stay in a column of readable width instead of stretching across the screen.

On the rail and the sidebar there is no person icon in the page headers; Settings is the item at the foot. See find your way around the app.

On a Mac

  • Menu bar. The Tavala menu holds Settings… (Command-comma). File holds New Transaction (Command-N) and Find in Activity (Command-F). View holds Home, Budgets, Money, Plan, Reports and Recurring (Command-1 to Command-6) and Hide Amounts or Show Amounts (Shift-Command-H). The full list is in keyboard shortcuts.
  • Touch ID or your Mac password is the device check. The app lock, the confirmation before connecting a bank and the optional checks before exporting or deleting all use it. See lock Tavala.
  • Connecting a bank opens Plaid in a sign-in window outside the app. Tavala shows "Finish in the Plaid window" with a Cancel button until the bank is connected. See connect a bank account.
  • Updates come from the Mac App Store; see get the latest version.
  • Widget. The widget is available in the Mac's widget gallery; see add the home screen widget.

On an iPad

  • The widget works on the iPad Home Screen.
  • Face ID, Touch ID or your passcode is the device check, as on an iPhone.
  • Updates come from the App Store, as on an iPhone.

Good to know

  • Same account, any device. Sign in on another device with the same email and password. On the free plan only one device syncs at a time, and an iPad and a Mac each count as a device; see devices on the free plan.
  • Wording. Where the iPhone app says "this phone", the iPad and the Mac say "this iPad" or "this Mac". The first time you hide amounts on a Mac, the sheet says "Only on this Mac. Click the eye, or press Shift-Command-H, to show them again."
  • Plus follows your account. A Plus purchase made on one device applies on your others; see get Tavala Plus.
  • No separate edition. There are no extra features on a tablet or a Mac. Everything is the same app at a different size.
