Add the home screen widget
The Today's spending widget shows what you spent today and this month, and one tap opens Add transaction. It is available on iPhone, iPad and Mac.
The Today's spending widget puts two numbers on your Home Screen: what you have spent today and what you have spent this month. Tapping it opens Tavala's Add transaction screen. It exists for iPhone, iPad and Mac. There is no widget for Android or the web.
Add it on an iPhone or an iPad
The steps are the system's, not Tavala's.
- Touch and hold an empty spot on the Home Screen until the icons start to move.
- Tap + at the top of the screen.
- Search for Tavala and choose Today's spending.
- Pick a size, small or medium, then tap Add Widget and Done.
Open Tavala once afterwards, so the widget has numbers to show.
Add it on a Mac
- Right-click the desktop, or open Notification Center, and choose Edit Widgets.
- Search for Tavala and choose Today's spending.
- Pick a size and add it.
Where macOS lets you place the widget (Notification Center or the desktop) depends on your macOS version.
What the widget shows
| Part | What it shows |
|---|---|
| Today | What you spent today. It reads "Nothing yet" after midnight until you open Tavala, and "-" before Tavala has sent any data |
| + icon | A tap anywhere on the widget opens Add transaction |
| This month | The small widget shows "<amount> this month". The medium widget shows a This month row |
| No data yet | "Open Tavala to get started" |
- Spending only. The numbers are your expenses minus refunds, trips and projects included, transfers left out. They are in the main currency of the space you have open. The widget never shows a balance.
- It follows the app. Tavala refreshes the widget whenever your data changes and when you come back to the app. At local midnight it resets today's figure by itself.
- After a new month starts, the month figure shows "-" until you open Tavala.
Good to know
- Add transaction from the widget works while the app is locked. If you use the app lock, the widget opens the Add transaction screen without asking you to unlock. When you close it, the lock screen returns.
- Hidden amounts do not change the widget. Hiding amounts applies inside the app. The widget marks its figures as private, so the system can hide them where it hides widget content, such as a locked screen.
- Signing out clears it. The widget empties when you sign out, so the next person does not see your figures. A guest's widget shows what is on the device.
- No plan needed. The widget is the same on every plan.
- On Android, use the + button in the bottom bar to open quick capture. On the web there is no widget.
- Sizes. The widget comes in small and medium only. There is no Lock Screen widget.
