Keyboard shortcuts on iPad, Mac and the web
Every Tavala keyboard shortcut for a hardware keyboard on iPad, Mac, Android tablets and desktop browsers, plus the Mac menu bar and keys inside lists.
Tavala answers a keyboard when the window is 600 points wide or more: an iPad with a keyboard, a Mac, an Android tablet with a keyboard, or a desktop browser. On a phone-width window no shortcuts are bound. A shortcut waits while a form or a sheet is open, so a key never drops what you have typed.
Shortcuts
Use Command on a Mac and an iPad. Use Ctrl on Android, Windows and Linux.
| What it does | Mac and iPad | Android, Windows, Linux |
|---|---|---|
| New transaction: opens the capture bar | Command-N | Ctrl-N |
| Find in Activity: opens HomeActivity and puts the cursor in the search field | Command-F | Ctrl-F |
| Home | Command-1 | Ctrl-1 |
| Budgets | Command-2 | Ctrl-2 |
| Money | Command-3 | Ctrl-3 |
| Plan | Command-4 | Ctrl-4 |
| Reports | Command-5 | Ctrl-5 |
| Recurring | Command-6 | Ctrl-6 |
| Hide Amounts, or Show Amounts when they are hidden | Shift-Command-H | Shift-Ctrl-H |
| Ask Tavala: opens the sheet for the tab in front. See ask Tavala a question | Command-J | Ctrl-J |
| Settings | Command-comma | Ctrl-comma |
Pressing the key for the tab you are on returns that tab to its first page. Pressing the key for the page you are on (Reports, Recurring or Settings) does nothing.
Keys inside the app
- Return in the capture bar saves the entry. See add an expense in one line.
- Number keys type the amount in the full form, at any window width: the digits, a point or a
comma,
+,-,*orx,/, and Backspace. See the full form. - Escape closes a form window, and closes the details pane beside an Activity list.
- Up and Down arrow walk the rows of Activity, or of a wallet's entries, in a window 840 points wide or more. Home and End jump to the first and last row, and Return opens the highlighted row's details.
- Arrow keys move the selected day in the calendar on the Recurring page. Page Up and Page Down change the month.
The Mac menu bar
On a Mac, the same commands are in the menu bar, and the menu shows each key:
- Tavala: About, Settings…, Services, Hide, Quit.
- File: New Transaction, Find in Activity.
- View: Home, Budgets, Money, Plan, then Reports, Recurring and Hide Amounts (it reads Show Amounts while amounts are hidden), then full screen.
- Window: Minimize, Zoom, Bring All to Front.
Good to know
- In a browser, the browser may keep some of these keys for itself, such as new window, switching tabs and find. If a key does not reach Tavala, use the + button, the tabs and Settings instead. Every command is also a button.
- On a Mac, Command-H hides the app, which is why hidden amounts use Shift-Command-H.
- The keys are fixed. There is no setting to change them. Everything a shortcut does is also on screen. See find your way around the app.
