Record income and refunds
Start a line with + for income, or write refund for money back on a purchase. Income counts in Money in; a refund lowers what you spent.
Type + before the amount for income (+3200 salary), and the word refund for money back on
something you bought (40 refund dinner). Both add money to a wallet. Income counts in Money in. A
refund does not: it lowers what you spent instead.
Record income
- Open the capture bar (see Add an expense in one line).
- Type the amount with a
+on it, or with an income word:+3200 salary, salary 3200,got paid 3200or3200 received. - Check the chips above the field. They show the amount in the income colour, Income, the category (here Salary) and the wallet.
- Tap the arrow on the right, or press Return.

Income words make an entry income in all six languages the bar reads: salary, got paid,
received, sold, gehalt, nómina, salaire, плата, तनख्वाह मिली and more, and so does a
word for an income category such as freelance, dividend or interest. A word that is not on the
list, such as invoice, does not: write +800 invoice. The + can be anywhere on the amount. See
everything the capture bar understands.
If the bar read the line as an expense, tap the Expense chip once to change it to Income.
In the full form, tap the Income pill instead. The grid then shows your income categories. Tavala starts every space with Salary, Freelance, Investment, Gift, Refund and Other Income, and you can add your own in Categories.
Record a refund
A refund is money back for something you bought: a returned jumper, a cancelled order.
- Open the capture bar.
- Type the amount, a refund word and what it was for:
40 refund dinner, refunded 12 taxi, money back 20 shoesorremboursé 40 chaussures. - Check the chips. The type chip reads Refund, and the category is the one the purchase had (here Food & Dining), because a refund uses your expense categories.
- Tap the arrow.
In the full form, tap the Refund pill and pick the purchase's category. In Activity a refund shows with a plus sign and a Refund tag.
The date of a refund is the day the money came back. If you bought the item last month, date the refund today: this month's spending goes down, and last month stays as it was.
Tavala does not link a refund to the purchase it undoes. They are two separate entries.
A tax refund is income
Money back that is not for something you bought, such as a tax refund, is income. Write
300 tax refund: with a tax word in the line (tax, steuer, hacienda, impôts, данок,
टैक्स), the entry is income and its category is Refund.
Income or refund
| Income | Refund | |
|---|---|---|
| Use it for | Pay, freelance work, interest, a gift you received, a tax refund | Money back for a purchase |
| You type | a + on the amount, or an income word such as salary or got paid | a refund word such as refund or money back |
| Category | An income category | An expense category |
| Wallet balance | Goes up | Goes up |
| Money in | Counts | Does not count |
| Spending and Money out | Not affected | Lowered |
| The category's spending and its budget | Not affected | Lowered |
A refund that belongs to a trip or a project lowers that trip's total. Money out never shows below 0. See what the numbers mean.
Good to know
- Another currency. Income and refunds take a currency like an expense does:
+€500 invoice, or the currency chip in the form. See record spending in another currency. - Which wallet. Both go into the wallet in the wallet chip. In the form, a refund on a credit card you track as a debt lowers what you owe; since no cash moved, it does not count in Money out.
- Changing the type later. Open the entry and tap another pill. Tavala asks first ("Change to income?"), because the entry is then counted differently everywhere. Switching between Expense and Refund keeps the category; any other switch clears it. See edit, delete or undo a transaction.
- From a bank. Money back that arrives through a connected bank is filed as a refund. It gets the purchase's expense category when Tavala is confident; otherwise pick the category yourself. See what a connected bank imports.
- Money you borrowed is not income. It is recorded as a debt; see track a loan or a credit line.
- Six languages. Income and refund words are read in English, German, Spanish, French, Macedonian and Hindi. See everything the capture bar understands.
