Share a space with someone
Create an invite code or invite by email. The space owner needs Tavala Plus or a Group pass, and the people who join never pay.
On this page
To share a space, its owner creates an invite code and sends it, or invites someone by email. The person who joins sees everything in the space and can add and edit entries. Sharing is part of Tavala Plus: one subscription covers everyone you invite, up to 6 people in a space (you included), and the people who join never pay. A Group pass opens a single space to 6 people for 60 days.
Only the space owner can invite. You and the person you invite both need a Tavala account.
Invite with a code
A code works on any device and for someone who has not yet joined Tavala, as long as they create an account before they use it.
- Switch to the space you want to share: tap the space name at the top of Home and pick it.
- Tap the space name again, then Manage & share spaces.
- Under This space, tap Create an invite code.
- Tap Create a code. The sheet Share this code shows the code in large letters.
- Tap Share to send it with Messages, WhatsApp, email or another app, or tap Copy (the sheet says "Code copied" and stays open). Tap Done when you are finished.
The message that Share prepares reads "Join my space on Tavala with this code" followed by the code, and tells them where to enter it. It carries no money figures.
A code works for 14 days or until its uses are gone, whichever comes first. The sheet tells you which, for example "It works for 14 days or 3 uses." Opening Create an invite code again shows the same code while it still works, rather than making a new one.
Invite by email
- Open the space, then Manage & share spaces.
- Tap Invite by email, type the address, for example
name@example.com, and tap Invite. - When it works, you see "name@example.com is in - the space syncs to them now."
The person must already have a Tavala account with that address. They are added at once, with no step for them to accept, and the app does not notify them, so tell them the space is there. They find it in the Your spaces sheet.
Join a space with a code
This is what the person you invited does.
- Create a Tavala account or sign in. Without an account, the Spaces screen shows "Sharing needs an account". See create an account to back up and sync.
- Tap the space name at the top of Home, then Manage & share spaces.
- Tap Join with a code, type the code (for example
K7M2XW4Q) and tap Join. - The space opens and Tavala says "You're in - the space is syncing."
Joining is free on every plan, and a person can be in any number of spaces. Their own devices and their own spaces stay on their own plan.
If something goes wrong
| You see | What it means and what to do |
|---|---|
| "Sharing a space is part of Plus. One subscription covers everyone you invite, and they never pay." | The Share this space sheet opened because the owner has no Plus and the space has no Group pass. Get Plus, or buy a Group pass, from the same sheet |
| "No Tavala account with that email yet - share a join code instead, or ask them to sign up first." | Use an invite code, or wait until they have an account |
| "This space has no free seats." | All the seats are taken. Remove a member to make room |
| "That code is invalid or has expired." | Check the characters, or create a new code |
| "Too many attempts. Try again later." | Too many wrong codes were entered. Wait and try again |
| "This space is full. The person who shared the code can add seats." | The person tried to join a full space. The owner sees them under "Waiting for a seat" |
| "Only the space owner can invite members." | Only the owner can invite. Ask the owner |
When someone is waiting, the owner sees their address under Waiting for a seat on the Spaces screen. Where Plus would make room, the line "Plus opens this space to 6 people" opens the Plus sheet.
Good to know
- You need a connection. Creating a code, inviting and joining talk to Tavala's server.
- You can stop a code early. Open Create an invite code to show the code, tap Stop this code, then Stop code on the sheet "Stop this code?". No one can join with it after that, and the message reads "Code stopped". People who already joined stay; to take someone out, see leave a space or remove a member. The next time you open Create an invite code you can make a new one.
- Entries do not show who added them. Everyone in the space sees the same entries, and the app does not label them by person.
- The Group pass is not sold in the web app yet. Buy it in the iPhone, iPad, Mac or Android app. A space can have only one Group pass.
- If Plus ends, the space follows the owner's free plan and members keep read access only. See what each member can do.
