Export all your data

Save everything you entered in Tavala as one JSON file - wallets, transactions, budgets, recurring rules, bank connections and trips. It is not encrypted.

Works on iPhone, iPad, Android, Mac and the webUpdated

Export my data writes everything you entered in Tavala to one JSON file on your device. It works offline, as a guest or signed in, on every plan. The file is not encrypted and Tavala cannot read it back in, so it is a copy to keep or move, not a backup.

Export your data

  1. Open SettingsDataExport my data. On a phone, Settings is the round person icon at the top right. On an iPad or a Mac it is at the foot of the rail or the sidebar.
  2. If you turned on Exporting your data in Sign-in & security, your device confirms it is you first.
  3. Tavala builds the file from the data on this device.
  4. Choose where it goes:
    • On an iPhone, iPad, Mac or Android, the share sheet opens. Save it to Files, send it to another app or share it as an attachment.
    • In a browser, the file downloads.

The file is named tavala-export- followed by the date and time, ending in .json, for example tavala-export-2026-10-21-093000.json.

If something goes wrong, Tavala says "Export failed:" followed by the reason.

What is in the file

The file has a meta header (the app, the format version, when it was made and your account id, or nothing for a guest) and a data section with 10 tables:

TableWhat it holds
workspacesYour spaces
workspace_membersWho belongs to each space
categoriesYour categories
walletsYour wallets and their balances
transactionsEvery entry, with its type, category, wallet, trip or project and note
budgetsYour budgets
recurring_rulesYour bills and recurring rules
bank_connectionsThe banks you connected, without any credentials
bank_accountsThe accounts under those connections
purposesYour trips and projects

Each row is written as stored. Money is in minor units (cents for euros and dollars) with the currency code beside it, so 480 with EUR is €4.80.

Not in the file: device settings, cached exchange rates, notification choices, the app lock and hidden-amounts choices, and the bank access credential, which stays on Tavala's servers and never reaches your device.

Good to know

  • It is not encrypted. Anyone who gets the file can read all of it. Store it somewhere private and delete copies you no longer need.
  • It covers what is on this device. Signed in, that is your account's data, including shared spaces you belong to, plus any changes that have not synced yet. Wait for sync to finish first if you are not sure.
  • There is no import. Tavala cannot read the file back in. Its use is keeping your records, moving them to another tool, or having a copy before you delete your account.
  • Reports are separate. A report as CSV or PDF is a different export. See export a report as CSV or PDF. The free plan exports the current month there. The JSON export of everything is never limited.
  • Hidden amounts do not apply. The file contains real amounts even while amounts are hidden on screen. See hide amounts on screen.
  • A guest can export too. There is no account to look after the data, so an export is the way to keep a copy off the device.
