Safe to spend and the next 30 days

Safe to spend is the money in your spending wallets minus the recurring bills due before your next income, or in the next 30 days. It never goes below zero.

Works on iPhone, iPad, Android, Mac and the webUpdated

Safe to spend answers one question: how much of the money in your wallets is not already promised to a recurring bill? Tavala takes What's Left, subtracts the bills that fall due before your next income, and shows the rest. If the answer would be negative, it shows 0.

The formula

Safe to spend = What's Left − recurring bills due before your next income

  • What's Left is the balance of your spending wallets, in your main currency. Savings goals, debts and lending are not in it. See what the numbers mean.
  • Bills are your active recurring rules from tomorrow up to and including the end of the window: recurring expenses, and recurring payments into a loan or card wallet. A confirm-first rule that is already due and still waiting is counted too. Today's automatic bills are already posted, so they are already out of What's Left.
  • Payday is the date of the next occurrence of a recurring Income rule. The window ends there. If no income rule falls inside the next 30 days, the window is the next 30 days.
  • Never below zero. If bills are larger than the balance, the figure is 0.

Example

Today is the 12th. Current account holds €1,850.00 and Cash holds €120.00, so What's Left is €1,970.00. You have rent of €950.00 on the 20th, an internet bill of €30.00 on the 15th, and a monthly salary rule of €3,200.00 on the 28th.

  • Bills before payday: €950.00 + €30.00 = €980.00.
  • Safe to spend: €1,970.00 − €980.00 = €990.00.

Home reads "Safe to spend before payday", €990.00, "After €980.00 of bills, payday 28 Oct". The Cash-flow forecast screen reads "After €980.00 in bills before your next income on 28 Oct".

Where to find it

  • HomeOverview: the bills card. Its heading is Safe to spend before payday when an income rule ends the window, or Safe to spend, next 30 days when none does. If nothing that costs money is due (for example only your salary is coming), the heading is Bills and the card has no figure. The card is hidden until you have a recurring rule.
  • PlanCash-flow forecast: the Safe to spend card under the forecast chart. With no recurring rules at all, the card shows the figure with "No bills due in the next 30 days", which equals What's Left.

What it leaves out

  • Budgets. Safe to spend does not subtract what is left in a budget. Budgets are a separate measure.
  • Moves between your own wallets and savings goal top-ups. Only payments into debt wallets count as bills.
  • One-off plans. Only recurring rules count. A future purchase you have not set up as a rule is not subtracted.
  • Paused and finished rules.

Good to know

  • A "≈" before the figure means some bills are in another currency and were converted at today's rate.
  • Bills with no exchange rate cannot be priced. The line then says "excl. 1 bill with no rate", or "1 bill due in the next 30 days has no rate yet" when every bill was left out.
  • It does not depend on the 60 and 90 day forecast. The window is fixed at 30 days at most, whichever horizon you choose on the forecast screen.
  • Free and Plus. Safe to spend is the same on both plans.
  • Hidden amounts. With amounts hidden, the figure turns to dots and the line leaves out the amount of bills.
  • To change the answer, edit the rules in bills and recurring payments.
