What Ask Tavala sends and keeps

Your question and the names it needs go to OpenAI, or Anthropic for a hard question. Amounts and notes stay on your device, and nothing trains a model.

Works on iPhone, iPad, Android, Mac and the webUpdated

Ask Tavala does the arithmetic on your device and uses an AI model only to understand your question and write the answer. Before your first question, Tavala shows you what is sent, where it goes and what is never included, and asks you to turn it on.

What is sent

  • Your question, exactly as you typed it, with the earlier questions and answers in the same sheet. An amount or a name you type into the question is sent as written.
  • The names the answer needs from the space you are in: wallets, categories, trips and projects, and recurring rules.
  • The shape of the answer: where each figure goes, dates and counts.
  • The context of the question: today's date and weekday, the screen you asked from (and the month, wallet, trip, debt or day it shows), your main currency's code, your plan, your app language and whether amounts are hidden. A breakdown carries each part's share as a whole percent, never its amount.

What is never sent

  • Amounts from your entries. The model sees a placeholder, and your device fills in the figure when the answer appears.
  • Notes on your entries, kept back the same way.
  • Anything from your other spaces, bank sign-in details or card numbers.

Where it goes

Your device sends the request to Tavala's servers in the European Union (Ireland), and they pass it to OpenAI, or for a hard question on Tavala Plus to Anthropic, which write the answer. Neither uses it to train its models; under their business terms they may keep a request for up to 30 days to check for misuse, then delete it. The privacy policy has the full detail.

What Tavala keeps

  • On the server: that you turned Ask Tavala on, and one line per question in the activity log: the time, the tool, the space, how many rows it read and who answered. Never the words or an amount. Lines are deleted after 90 days, and your data export includes them.
  • On this device: your last three questions, offered again as suggestions. Signing out removes them.
