Tavala vs Monarch Money
Monarch is built on bank connections, for households in the US and Canada, at $99.99 a year with no free plan, and does no currency conversion. Tavala starts with no bank and no account, works offline, holds every currency in one budget and is free to start. Choose Monarch if you live in the US or Canada and want every account aggregated automatically; choose Tavala if you live elsewhere, hold money in several currencies, or would rather not link a bank.
What Tavala is
Tavala is a private, offline-first personal finance app for budgets and expenses in any currency, on iPhone, iPad, Android, Mac and the web. It starts with no account and no bank: you type what you paid in one line, in any of 155 currencies and 96 cryptocurrencies, and every entry keeps the exchange rate of its day. Budgets show what is left, bills feed a safe-to-spend figure, and debts get a snowball or avalanche plan. It is free to start; Tavala Plus is $39.99 a year on the web for every device, every currency and spaces shared with up to six people. A read-only bank connection is an optional add-on for banks in the United States and Canada.
What Monarch is
Monarch Money is a subscription money app that aggregates your accounts through financial data providers (13,000 or more institutions) into budgets, cash flow, investments and net worth. It is available in the US and Canada only, on iPhone, iPad, Android and the web, with household members added at no extra cost, an AI assistant and flex budgeting by default.
Where it works
Monarch says plainly that it is available only in the US and Canada, and it charges and refunds only in US dollars. Tavala works in every country, because it does not depend on a bank feed: you type what you paid, in any currency. Its own bank connection is an optional add-on for banks in the United States and Canada.
Currencies
Monarch does no currency conversion: it shows every amount with a dollar sign, so a 1,000 yen purchase appears as $1,000, and it recommends connecting only USD or CAD accounts. Its help page, updated 22 October 2026, says it has no plans to expand currency support in the near future. Tavala converts every entry into your main currency at the rate of the day it was paid and keeps that rate, across 155 currencies and 96 cryptocurrencies.
Bank linking, privacy and AI
Monarch starts from your bank connections; that is its strength and the reason it needs your institutions' data. Tavala starts from nothing: no account, nothing sent, until you choose to sync. Monarch's AI assistant and auto-categorization work on your transaction data with OpenAI, Anthropic and Google models, and auto-categorization cannot be turned off. Tavala's assistant, Ask Tavala, is off until you turn it on, and the AI model never receives an amount from your ledger.
Price
Monarch Core is $99.99 a year or $14.99 a month after a 7-day trial, with no free plan. Tavala is free to start, and Tavala Plus is $39.99 a year or $6.99 a month on the web, with bank connections at $3.99 a month per bank on top for those who want them.

Choose Tavala if
- You live outside the US and Canada, or bank with institutions an aggregator does not reach.
- You hold accounts in more than one currency and want them added up correctly.
- You would rather not link a bank, or want to start with no account at all.
- You want the app to work fully offline, or a free plan.
Choose Monarch if
- You live in the US or Canada and want every account aggregated automatically.
- You want household members added at no extra cost, each with their own login.
- You want investment and net worth tracking fed by your institutions.
Switching from Monarch
Monarch exports transactions and balance history as CSV from the web, for one account or all of them. Tavala cannot import those files yet. Keep the export, and start Tavala with today's balances: one wallet per account, in its own currency, your bills as recurring rules and the budgets you still use. Debts can be imported into Tavala from a CSV file.
If you bank in the United States or Canada and want transactions to keep arriving, Tavala's bank add-on imports up to two years of history from each connected bank, read-only through Plaid.
Tavala publishes this page and is one of the apps on it. Facts about Monarch are from its own pages, checked on 24 October 2026. Corrections are welcome at the address on the about page.
Questions
- Does Tavala work in Europe, the UK or Australia?
- Yes. Everything works in every country, by hand, in any currency. Only the optional bank connection is limited to banks in the United States and Canada.
- Does Tavala have an AI assistant like Monarch's?
- Yes, Ask Tavala, and it is off until you turn it on. It answers from your own ledger with the figures worked out on your device; the AI model never sees an amount.
- Can my partner join, as with Monarch's household members?
- Yes. A shared space holds up to six people with their own devices. Sharing is part of Tavala Plus for the owner, and the people who join never pay.
