What Tavala is

Tavala is a private, offline-first personal finance app for budgets and expenses in any currency, on iPhone, iPad, Android, Mac and the web. It starts with no account and no bank: you type what you paid in one line, in any of 155 currencies and 96 cryptocurrencies, and every entry keeps the exchange rate of its day. Budgets show what is left, bills feed a safe-to-spend figure, and debts get a snowball or avalanche plan. It is free to start; Tavala Plus is $39.99 a year on the web for every device, every currency and spaces shared with up to six people. A read-only bank connection is an optional add-on for banks in the United States and Canada.

What Copilot is

Copilot Money is a subscription app for iPhone, iPad, Mac (a native app) and the web, built on bank connections through Plaid and Finicity to more than 10,000 US institutions. It categorizes transactions automatically, has a conversational Money Assistant in beta, and shows no ads. It works with US-based accounts only, is available only in the US App Store, and supports only US dollars.

Devices

Copilot runs on Apple devices and the web; there is no Android app. Tavala runs on iPhone, iPad, Android, a native Mac app and the web, so a household with one Android phone and one iPhone can share one budget. Both have a native Mac app.

Countries and currencies

Copilot works only with US-based accounts and only in US dollars; foreign transactions arrive in dollars as the data provider reports them. Tavala works anywhere, holds every currency in one space and keeps the rate of the day on each entry.

Bank linking and sharing

Copilot is built on your bank connections. Tavala is built to work without them, with an optional read-only add-on for banks in the United States and Canada. For a partner, Copilot's help describes forwarding a sign-in link so they use your account, with full control. Tavala shares a space with up to six people, each with their own account and device, and each can keep private spaces.

Price

Copilot is $95 a year, or $13 a month in the App Store, after a one-month trial, with no free plan. Tavala is free to start and Tavala Plus is $39.99 a year or $6.99 a month on the web.

Switching from Copilot

Copilot exports all transactions as CSV from Settings on iOS, or filtered transactions on Mac, iPad and the web. Tavala cannot import that file yet; keep it as your archive and start Tavala with today's balances, your recurring bills and your budgets. If you bank in the United States or Canada, Tavala's bank add-on imports up to two years of history from each connected bank.
